This drew the ire of Tanduay owner Bong Go who then claimed that the PBA was a SMC league. However, the PBA interfered after San Miguel protested this ridiculous offer by Tanduay (16 years would mean Ildefonso would still be paid until 2018 or when he would be close to 50 years already) and rescinded the offer sheet. Danny Ildefonso was given the offer sheet by Tanduay Gold worth the maximum contract of P500k a month good for 16 years (!) for a whopping P96M package exclusive of bonuses. Purefoods was able to retain Patrimonio here. In 1997, Patrimonio was once more offered the maximum salary, but this time good for 5 years worth more than P30M. Lucia, not wanting to see a potential twin tower duo in Limpot and rookie pick Dennis Espino go to waste, matched Pepsi's offer. In 1995, Jun Limpot topped the Patrimonio record when Pepsi Mega (again) offered the former DLSU superstar the maximum contract of P500k spread over 4 years, plus bonuses, amounting to something like P24M. Eventually, Purefoods matched the offer sheet and retained the Captain's services. It was deemed a legal move by the then Lorenzo franchise who was aching to get out of the cellar by prying Patrimonio away from the Hotdogs via the offer sheet. ![]() In 1991, Pepsi Mega rocked the PBA when they offered Alvin Patrimonio the maximum salary of P500k a month spread over 3 years, plus bonuses among others, worth up to P21M. ![]() What was common knowledge though was that Jaworski was earning P1M a month during his tenure at Ginebra - P500k as player and P500 as coach. Of course, the unconfirmed reports showed that Robert Jaworski was the highest paid player in the PBA back then but this was never substantiated. Players from Crispa and Toyota were averaging close to P5k a month so you know Paner's salary was quite special. It all started in 1978 when Great Taste Coffee took Manny Paner away from Royal Tru Orange at a princely sum (then) of P8,000 a month. Over the years, there have been players who were tagged as the highest paid in the PBA. ![]()
